What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a reading program that encourages students to read. Students read books on their reading level and take a multiple choice quiz about the book. Each book has a different point value and students earn the points based on their percentage correct for each quiz. Students accumulate points to earn awards.
Why is it important?
The purpose of Accelerated Reader is to enable powerful practice. It does this by
• providing data that helps you monitor and personalize reading practice.
• encouraging substantial amounts of practice, according to guidelines based on research findings.
• making practice fun for students by facilitating successful encounters with text
When a student reads for 15 minutes at least 4 days a week, by the end of the school year he/she will have read for a total of 2,160 minutes!
When can my child take a quiz?
Students may take a quiz in the classroom at a time designated by the teacher. Students may also take quizzes in the library after they have finished checking out. The computer lab is open most mornings before school and students may take quizzes then as well.
